Dele Momodu predicts Peter Obi will defeat Tinubu in southern Nigeria by 2027

Dele Momodu, a senior member of the African Democratic Congress, has predicted that Peter Obi will secure victory over President Bola Tinubu in Nigeria's southeastern and parts of south-southern regions during the 2027 presidential election. Momodu made the forecast during an appearance on Arise Television's Prime Time programme, describing Obi as a prominent political figure with substantial backing across both zones.

Momodu claimed that Obi's influence will extend beyond challenging Tinubu nationally. The ADC chieftain stated specifically that the former Anambra State governor will overwhelmingly defeat Anambra's current governor, Charles Soludo, in his home state during the election cycle.

Momodu expressed confidence in this prediction, saying he would stake his reputation on the outcome. Beyond regional analysis, Momodu also raised concerns about the composition of the Independent National Electoral Commission ahead of 2027.

He accused President Tinubu of staffing INEC predominantly with officials of Yoruba origin, contending that this appointments strategy undermines the electoral commission's credibility. Momodu, whose mother is from Osun State, suggested that voters in that southwestern state cannot be dismissed at the ballot box.

Momodu additionally predicted that Tinubu faces potential headwinds in the North. He cited the absence of fresh support from former President Muhammadu Buhari, who backed Tinubu's candidacy in 2023, as a factor that could weaken the incumbent's performance in that region.

The veteran journalist's remarks reflect ongoing assessments within opposition circles regarding the political landscape heading into the next presidential contest.
