Delta mourns Uduaghan as regional leaders pay tributes to ex-governor

Former Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, 71, died October 19. Regional leaders and community groups have issued condolences.

Former Delta State Governor Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan passed away on Monday, October 19, 2026, at age 71, triggering an outpouring of condolences from political figures and ethnic organisations across Nigeria's South-South region. His remains arrived in Delta State on Tuesday, where Governor Sheriff Oborevwori received the body at Osubi Airport in Okpe Local Government Area before visiting the deceased's widow, Deaconess Roli Uduaghan, at their residence in Warri.

The South-South Governors Forum, chaired by Bayelsa State Governor Senator Douye Diri, extended sympathy to the Delta State government and the Uduaghan family, acknowledging the former governor's contributions to public service and regional leadership. Senate President Godswill Akpabio characterised Uduaghan's death as a significant loss to Nigeria and the Niger Delta region, noting the loss came just days before what would have been his birthday.

The Urhobo Progress Union Worldwide released a statement honouring Uduaghan's tenure as governor from 2007 to 2015, commending his approach to governance that prioritised human welfare and practical development initiatives. The union extended condolences to his family, the Itsekiri Nation, and Delta State leadership.

In Isoko South Local Government Area, the Regent-elect of Umeh Kingdom declared Friday, October 23, a community mourning day, with residents suspending trading and farming activities to honour Uduaghan's development contributions to the area. The widespread mourning reflects Uduaghan's standing across Delta State's diverse communities and the broader Niger Delta region.

Multiple political and cultural leaders have cited his leadership record as central to their tributes, emphasising both his administrative tenure and his role in regional affairs.
