Esther Okereke: Democracy in Nigeria is in Distress

Esther Okereke, the presidential candidate for the National Rescue Movement (NRM), declared that democracy in Nigeria is in distress during a statement released to commemorate June 12, a significant date in Nigerian history. She highlighted that 33 years ago, various Nigerian tribes united in faith, transcending political party lines.

Okereke referenced prominent figures such as MKO Abiola, Kudirat Abiola, Gani Fawehinmi, and Beko Ransom Kuti, who faced violence and threats in their fight for democracy. She lamented the current state of Nigeria, where over 100 million citizens live in poverty and young people flee the country due to fear and lack of opportunities.

Okereke stressed that mere remembrance without action is insufficient and called for collective determination among Nigerians to honor the sacrifices made for democracy. She urged citizens to engage in meaningful efforts rather than superficial discussions on social media, emphasizing the need for collaboration to revive the nation.
