Oluremi Tinubu Advocates for Rights Protection in Democracy

On 16 September 2026, Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, delivered a message marking the 2026 International Day of Democracy, themed “Bring Human Rights into Focus.” She stated that democracy must extend beyond elections to guarantee the rights, dignity, and freedoms of Nigerians, emphasizing that citizens should be central to democratic governance. Tinubu highlighted Nigeria's progress over 65 years since independence and more than 25 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, citing stronger institutions, peaceful transitions of power, and increased citizen participation in governance.

She urged for ongoing efforts to deepen democracy and ensure governance benefits all Nigerians, calling for a collective commitment to democratic values, human rights, and the creation of a more inclusive society.
