Virginia Supreme Court Rules Against Democratic Redistricting

On a recent Friday, the Virginia Supreme Court ruled that the Democratic-led legislature violated procedural requirements when attempting to place a congressional redistricting amendment on the ballot. The court found that the legislature's actions tainted the referendum vote, rendering it null and void.

This ruling is a major setback for Democrats, who had hoped to counteract Republican advantages in the state's congressional map. The amendment, which was approved by voters with a 52% to 48% margin, aimed to allow redistricting in response to a lawsuit brought by Republicans.

The court's decision means that the current congressional district map will remain in effect for the upcoming 2022 and 2024 elections, favoring Republicans. Democratic leaders, including Governor Abigail Spanberger and Congresswoman Suzan DelBene, expressed disappointment over the ruling, emphasizing the need to ensure voter voices are heard in future elections.

Republican National Committee Chair Joe Gruters celebrated the ruling as a victory for the rule of law.
