Nigeria's Government Celebrates 66 Years of Progress Amid Challenges

On September 24, 2026, Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, addressed a press conference in Abuja to mark the upcoming 66th Independence Anniversary of Nigeria on October 1, 2026. He acknowledged that despite significant progress since independence, Nigerians continue to face challenges such as poverty, insecurity, and infrastructure deficits.

Akume highlighted the country's achievements, including maintaining sovereignty, 27 years of uninterrupted constitutional democracy, and economic diversification. He noted that Nigeria has evolved from a colonial agricultural economy to a major oil producer with growing sectors in telecommunications, banking, and manufacturing.

However, he recognized that many Nigerians still experience hardships, and identified terrorism, banditry, and infrastructure deficits as ongoing challenges. Akume outlined the reforms initiated by President Bola Tinubu's administration since 2023, including the removal of the fuel subsidy and unification of foreign exchange windows, aimed at restoring fiscal balance and fostering economic growth.

He emphasized the government's commitment to infrastructure development and attracting investments.
