Ugandan Opposition Leader Besigye Critically Ill, Sparks Political Controversy

Kizza Besigye, a prominent Ugandan opposition leader, is reported to be critically ill in a hospital, with his party alleging a lack of proper care and demanding independent medical access. Besigye, a four-time presidential challenger to President Yoweri Museveni, was imprisoned in November 2024 on charges of treason and illegal firearm possession.

His deteriorating health has led to concerns about government neglect and political motivations behind his treatment. Besigye's wife, Winnie Byanyima, has criticized the prison authorities for denying him adequate medical attention.

The People's Front for Freedom accuses the state of systematically denying Besigye proper care. The Ugandan Prison Service spokesman, Frank Baine, has provided a conflicting account, claiming Besigye is receiving necessary treatment.
