Former petroleum minister cleared of bribery charges after 13-year UK investigation, claims law enforcement destroyed her reputation and career.

Diezani Alison-Madueke, Nigeria's former Minister of Petroleum Resources, has been found not guilty of accepting bribes following a prolonged investigation by the United Kingdom's National Crime Agency. A jury at Southwark Crown Court delivered the acquittal verdict on five counts of bribery and conspiracy to commit bribery on Wednesday.

The legal proceedings, which commenced in January, represented the culmination of a search that spanned 13 years. In a BBC interview following her acquittal, the ex-minister expressed deep frustration with the investigation's impact on her personal and professional life.

She stated that the extended probe prevented her from travelling and working, while simultaneously damaging her public standing and integrity. Alison-Madueke, who served as petroleum minister under former President Goodluck Jonathan from 2010 to 2015, emphasised the emotional and psychological toll the investigation inflicted despite her maintaining innocence throughout.

The former minister directed criticism at UK law enforcement authorities, asserting that the investigation process was fundamentally unfair and caused severe disruption to her freedom. She also raised concerns about the handling of evidence during the prosecution.

The National Crime Agency has not publicly responded to these specific allegations regarding evidence management, though the agency maintains its investigation followed proper procedures. Alison-Madueke's acquittal brings to a close the legal battle that began following her arrest in 2015.

She was the first female president of the Oil Exporting Group at the time of her ministerial tenure. The verdict marks the end of years of legal uncertainty for the 65-year-old former official, who maintained her position that she had committed no wrongdoing throughout the extended proceedings.
