Nigeria's Digital Postcode System Launches October 2026

The Federal Government of Nigeria announced that the new Alphanumeric Postcode System will be operational from October 1, 2026. Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, stated that this system will assign every home a unique postcode, replacing the old six-digit numerical codes.

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) will launch this GIS-enabled digital address system, which aims to improve logistics, security, and emergency response. The system will integrate geospatial data for accurate mapping on platforms like Google Maps, allowing Nigerians to generate and verify their codes through web portals, mobile apps, and USSD codes.

Experts believe this initiative will eliminate vague location descriptions and reduce losses in failed e-commerce deliveries. It will also enhance intelligence gathering and law enforcement tracking.

Dr. Tijani emphasized that the initiative is a foundational layer of Digital Public Infrastructure, crucial for national planning and service delivery, and the government is committed to its successful integration across institutions.
