Microsoft Urges Nigeria to Enhance Public Sector AI Skills

Microsoft has called on Nigeria to prioritize the development of artificial intelligence (AI) skills within its public sector. Nony Ujam, the Government Affairs Director for Microsoft West Africa, stated that the country's ability to harness AI's transformative potential relies on the preparedness of policymakers and civil servants.

Ujam noted that successful AI adoption is driven by institutional capabilities that can translate innovations into national development. She emphasized that while Nigeria has made strides in AI strategy, the growth remains modest due to a shortage of specialized skills in areas such as data engineering and machine learning.

Ujam outlined a phased approach to strengthen AI capabilities across government institutions, which includes identifying existing skill gaps and designing targeted learning programs for senior public officials. She also mentioned the importance of AI literacy extending beyond technical personnel to include administrative decision-makers.

Microsoft is collaborating with various agencies, including the NDPC and NITDA, to enhance data governance and cybersecurity expertise as part of a nationwide initiative to develop technical talent.
