NBC and NigComSat Launch Hybrid Broadcast Plan

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and Nigerian Communications Satellite (NigComSat) have announced a hybrid broadcast plan aimed at improving digital broadcasting coverage across Nigeria. During a joint press briefing in Abuja, NBC Director General Charl Ebuebu explained that the new system is designed to unify broadcast delivery and enhance access to free air channels, thereby strengthening the country's creative media industry.

He emphasized that Nigerians will not need to purchase new specialized decoders, as the FreeTV platform will be compatible with existing digital receivers. Approximately 10 million DVB-compliant devices are already connected to the platform, allowing households to access 100 television channels without subscription fees.

The hybrid model integrates terrestrial broadcasting, satellite transmission, and internet-based streaming, enabling viewers to access content via mobile applications. NigComSat Managing Director Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen noted that Nigeria's current communication satellite will remain operational until its replacement in 2028, with a rigorous evaluation process already underway to ensure uninterrupted service delivery.
