Cyber Attacks on Nigerian Tertiary Institutions Rise

During the 2026 annual conference, directors from Nigerian tertiary institutions, including Daniel Inusa Yakmut, the chairman of COMDICT, expressed alarm over the rising cyber attacks on their digital infrastructure. They highlighted that these attacks pose significant threats to student data and financial information.

Yakmut noted that perpetrators often target student services rather than directly stealing from accounts, which complicates the issue. He emphasized the necessity for institutions to adapt to these threats, especially in light of potential funding cuts.

Arch Sonni Echono, the executive secretary of TETFund, urged directors to build partnerships that would enhance the outcomes of their institutions. The directors acknowledged the challenges faced in maintaining network reliability and the often thankless nature of their work, particularly when technical issues arise.

They called for increased funding for ICT initiatives to ensure the future security and effectiveness of educational institutions in Nigeria.
