Ebola Outbreak Threatens 20,000 Cases Amid Border Closure

The Ebola outbreak in Central Africa poses a significant threat, with U.S. health officials warning that cases could exceed 20,000 without stronger public health measures. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicated that the current outbreak in Congo, which began in the Ituri province, has already infected over 1,000 people, with 452 confirmed cases and 82 deaths reported as of Thursday.

Uganda closed its western border with Congo on May 28 to prevent cross-border contagion, leading to severe economic impacts for traders. Leah Masika, a Ugandan trader, expressed distress over her plantains stuck in a convoy, while Sylvia Asiimwe highlighted the plight of trucks carrying fish destined for Congolese cities.

The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak a public health emergency but discouraged border closures, acknowledging the high risk of contagion for neighboring countries. Uganda has confirmed 19 Ebola cases linked to the outbreak in Congo.
