House of Reps Calls for Ebola Funds and Surveillance Boost

The House of Representatives has urged for the immediate release of outstanding funds for health agencies and stronger disease surveillance to prevent the spread of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Nigeria. This call was made by the House Committee on Infectious Diseases on Wednesday in Abuja.
Committee chairman, Hon. Amobi Godwin Ogah, emphasized the importance of early detection and public cooperation in containing the disease. The appeal comes after a confirmed Ebola case involving a woman who arrived in Abuja from Uganda on October 20, 2026.
Health authorities are currently tracing 44 contacts for isolation and testing. The lawmakers called on the Federal Government to enhance preparedness, improve screening at entry points, and expand laboratory testing capacity.
They also highlighted the need for adequate infection prevention supplies and sufficient emergency response funding. The committee advised Nigerians to seek information from verified sources to avoid misinformation and pledged to engage relevant health institutions for updates on the situation.
