U.S. Warns Against Travel to Congo, South Sudan, Uganda

On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of State escalated its travel advisory to Level 4 for three African countries: the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), South Sudan, and Uganda, due to an ongoing outbreak of the Ebola virus disease.

The advisory urges American citizens to avoid travel to these nations. The advisory for Rwanda has been set at Level 3, recommending reconsideration of travel.

This update follows the World Health Organization's declaration on May 17 of a public health emergency of international concern regarding the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak, which originated in the DRC's northeastern Ituri Province. Health authorities report hundreds of suspected cases and dozens of deaths, primarily in Ituri Province.

The Bundibugyo strain of Ebola is considered rare, and currently, there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment available, raising concerns about transmission through direct contact with bodily fluids or contaminated objects, as the virus is not airborne.
