Edo State Launches Marathon to Combat Drug Abuse

The Edo State Government has expressed alarm over the escalating rates of drug and substance abuse in the state, which it claims are destroying lives across all age groups. Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa, represented by Pius Alile, the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor, made these remarks during the launch of the inaugural Governor Monday Okpebholo/Buba Marwa ‘Mini-Marathon Race Against Drug Abuse’ for secondary school students.

The event, organized by the Edo State Command of the NDLEA, aimed to raise awareness with the theme, "Run for Health, Run for Life, Run Against Drug Abuse." Idahosa emphasized that drug abuse is not confined to the youth but affects all demographics, including the middle class and prominent individuals. He advocated for inclusive approaches to combat the issue and commended the NDLEA for its efforts.

Dr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, the Edo State Commander of the NDLEA, noted that the fight against drug abuse must involve positive engagement through sports and education, highlighting the marathon as a unique initiative to promote healthy lifestyles and identify athletic talent.
