Nnamdi Kanu's Appeal Process Update by Aloi Ejimakor

Aloi Ejimakor, the counsel for Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), outlined the next steps in Kanu's appeal court case. In a statement posted on X on Wednesday, Ejimakor indicated that a notice of appeal was filed in February 2026, initiating the formal appeal process.

The appeal record will include the charge sheet, proceedings, and exhibits, which the registrar of the Federal High Court in Abuja will transmit to the appeal court. Kanu's legal team expects to file the appeal brief within 45 days of receiving the record, outlining arguments across 22 grounds to seek the overturning of Kanu's conviction.

The federal government will respond by filing its brief within 30 days, and Kanu's defense will submit a reply brief within 14 days if necessary. Ejimakor emphasized that the appeal process will adhere strictly to procedural rules, and once the briefs are filed, the appeal court will schedule a hearing date.

A three-member panel of justices will hear the arguments, with a judgment expected to be reserved and delivered within a few months, not exceeding 90 days.
