South Sudan's National Elections Commission Prepares for December Vote

On 22 December, South Sudan is scheduled to hold its first general election since gaining independence in 2011. This announcement follows President Salva Kiir's decision to dissolve the transitional government on the same day.

Gabriel Bol Deng Majok, Chairperson of the National Elections Commission, confirmed that preparations for the elections are underway. The Commission is set to begin voter registration after approving the necessary forms and assessing registration centers across the country.

During a briefing, the Commission also presented voting cards. The transitional arrangements in South Sudan were established under a peace deal in 2018, but the country has faced repeated delays in reaching key electoral benchmarks, which have postponed the elections.
