Consumers Demand Review of Nigeria's Power Sector Privatization

Electricity consumers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have called on the Federal Government to review the privatization of the power sector, which was initiated in November 2013. The privatization aimed to transfer ownership and management of power assets to private entities to improve efficiency, attract investment, and enhance electricity supply.

However, consumers, including Mr. Tund Omoregi, a resident of Kuje, expressed dissatisfaction, stating that the privatization has not yielded the desired results and that power supply has worsened since the transition from the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).

Mr. Iren Deji, another resident, emphasized that despite the privatization occurring 13 years ago, the situation has deteriorated, urging the government to revisit the privatization process.

Ms. Angela Okori, a nurse in Lugbe, highlighted that the aim of creating a competitive market has not been achieved, leading to instability in electricity supply.

Consumers are advocating for a reassessment to ensure stable electricity in Nigeria.
