Emir Sanusi Backs Dangote Refinery IPO With Caution on Investment Risk

The Emir of Kano urged Nigerians to invest in Dangote's refinery shares while warning against risking essential family funds or selling homes.
Muhammadu Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano, addressed investors at a Dangote Petroleum Refinery roadshow in Kano State on Thursday, endorsing participation in the facility's initial public offering while setting clear boundaries on how Nigerians should fund their purchases. The monarch cautioned prospective shareholders against liquidating homes or redirecting money allocated for children's education to acquire refinery shares.
Sanusi framed equity ownership in the refinery as a vehicle for building wealth over extended periods and positioned the investment opportunity within Kano's established commercial heritage. He encouraged individuals and business entities across the state to view share ownership as a means of direct participation in a major industrial venture.
At the same time, he stressed that investors should only commit capital they could comfortably set aside for an extended holding period without triggering financial strain. The Emir's remarks balanced two distinct messages: promotion of the IPO as an economic opportunity and a direct warning against overextending financially.
He suggested that prospective investors begin with modest allocations rather than commit sums they could not afford to lose entirely. His comments reflect broader concerns about retail investor behaviour in Nigerian capital markets, where smaller participants sometimes pursue high-risk positions with funds earmarked for living expenses.
The Dangote Refinery, described in the roadshow materials as a multi-billion-dollar facility, is positioned as capable of reducing Nigeria's dependence on imported petroleum products. Sanusi's dual messaging—encouraging participation while cautioning against financial overcommitment—appears designed to widen the investor base without encouraging reckless capital deployment among ordinary Nigerians attending the sensitisation event.
