Coroner Orders Witness Testimony in Onifade's Death Inquest

The coroner's inquest into the death of Mr. Pelumi Onifade, a young journalist with Gboah TV, has directed witnesses to testify regarding the circumstances of his death, which occurred during the #EndSARS protests on October 24, 2020.

The inquest, overseen by Magistrate Mr. Temitop Oladel, faced delays in receiving the autopsy report from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

The latest hearing took place on July 7, 2026, where Mr. Alimi Adamu, representing the Media Rights Agenda, emphasized the critical importance of the autopsy report in establishing the cause of death.

The court received feedback indicating that the report is substantially complete and expected to be finalized within two weeks. The inquest aims to identify witnesses who interacted with Onifade shortly before his death and to reconstruct the events surrounding the incident.

The proceedings are scheduled to continue on July 29, 2026, allowing time for the final autopsy report to be submitted.
