Enugu Assembly Passes Tax Harmonization Bill into Law

On Thursday, the Enugu State House of Assembly passed a bill aimed at harmonizing taxes and levies within the state. The bill, which underwent first, second, and third readings before being passed unanimously by the members, seeks to create a comprehensive list of taxes and levies to be collected by both the state and local governments.

Hon. Malachi Onyechi, representing Nsukka West, commended the state government for the initiative, emphasizing that it would help alleviate undue hardship on the populace. He noted that the bill is crucial for checking multiple taxation, which often leads to misunderstandings regarding the government's intent in tax collection.

Hon. Okei Mbah, representing Nkanu East, also supported the bill, highlighting its importance in attracting investors and streamlining the tax process. The law is set to be enacted in 2026, providing a structured approach to tax collection in Enugu State.
