Chelsea Coach Criticizes Referee Over Huddle Intrusion

Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior expressed his discontent with referee Paul Tierney's intrusion during a pre-match huddle before the Premier League match against Newcastle United on Saturday. Tierney stood at the halfway line as Chelsea players gathered for their traditional team talk, rather than stepping aside.

This unusual moment prompted light-hearted reactions from players, including Cole Palmer, who jokingly wrapped his arm around Tierney. Following Chelsea's 1-0 defeat, Rosenior stated he would seek clarification from the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) about why the referee chose to remain in the middle of the huddle.

He emphasized the importance of protecting players and respecting the game. Rosenior noted that Chelsea had already discussed the pre-match protocol with the referees prior to the game.

Former Premier League assistant referee Darren Cann described the incident as unusual but suggested it may have been a practical decision for Tierney to maintain control of the match restart. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe dismissed the incident as irrelevant to the match outcome.
