Newcastle and Liverpool to Honor Kevin Keegan's Legacy

Newcastle United and Liverpool are planning a tribute for club legend Kevin Keegan before their Premier League opening fixture at St James’ Park on Sunday, August 23, 2026, following his death at the age of 75. The two clubs are in discussions to honor Keegan’s contributions to both teams.

Newcastle confirmed it is collaborating with Liverpool, supporter groups, and the Premier League to ensure a fitting farewell. The club stated it would work closely with its Fan Advisory Board, the Newcastle United Supporters Trust, and Wor Flags to shape the tributes.

Keegan had a successful playing career at Liverpool, winning multiple titles, before managing Newcastle, where he led the club to Premier League promotion and a second-place finish. Tributes include black armbands for teams, a minute’s silence before a friendly against Gateshead, and displaying Keegan’s image during matches.

The tribute will occur in the seventh minute, recognizing his iconic number seven shirt. Newcastle will also consult Keegan’s family for a permanent tribute.
