Ethnic Profiling Threatens Nigeria's National Stability

Security experts have asserted that ethnic profiling in Nigeria reinforces harmful stereotypes and undermines national stability. During a high-level virtual dialogue organized by BSIL and Wiser, participants highlighted the imprecise nature of ethnic-based labels in security discourse, particularly in Nigeria's North West and North Central regions.

Dr. Kabir Adamu, Managing Director of BSIL, and Brigadier General Saleh Bala (rtd), President of Wiser, emphasized the need for a refined linguistic framework to enhance security operations.

Dr. Ukoha Ukiwo from the UK Foreign Commonwealth Development Office identified hate speech as a divisive narrative that drives violence.

Dr. Fatima Akilu of the Neem Foundation noted that ethnic labels often oversimplify complex issues, leading to further marginalization.

Professor Okei Okechukwu from Nnamdi Azikiwe University stressed the importance of grassroots-driven peacebuilding. Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman (rtd) urged the media to focus on criminal behavior rather than ethnic identity, with participants unanimously advocating for precise language to enhance human intelligence and public trust.
