EU allocates €2.3m emergency fund to tackle cholera across West, Central Africa

Nigeria to receive €1.5m of European Commission support to boost disease response and water sanitation efforts.

The European Commission has distributed €2.3 million in emergency humanitarian assistance to four African nations battling a cholera crisis. Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Chad are the beneficiary countries, with Nigeria receiving the largest allocation of €1.5 million to strengthen its outbreak response.

The funding comes as the World Health Organisation reports that the African Region recorded over 61,000 confirmed cholera cases within the first five months of 2026. The death toll across the continent reached at least 1,230 during the same period, underscoring the severity of the public health emergency.

In Nigeria, the €1.5 million injection will finance the deployment of additional outbreak response teams across affected regions. The money will also support the procurement of cholera treatment kits and other medical supplies required for immediate patient care.

A significant portion of the funds will be directed toward water, sanitation, and hygiene programmes, including rehabilitation of public water sources to prevent transmission through contaminated water supplies. The European Commission's decision to channel resources to these four nations reflects the ongoing health threat posed by cholera in the sub-Saharan region.

The funding mechanism is classified as emergency humanitarian assistance, indicating the urgent nature of the outbreak and the need for rapid intervention to prevent further disease spread.
