EU Backs Bill for More Women in Nigerian Legislature for Gender Balance

The European Union (EU) officially endorsed the Reserved Seats for Women Bill in Nigeria, supporting increased female representation in the legislature. The bill aims to establish 37 additional seats for women in the Senate and House of Representatives, as well as three reserved seats in each state assembly.

Currently, Nigeria has one of the lowest rates of female parliamentary participation globally. At the 2025 GOTNI National Leadership Conference in Abuja, EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, praised the bill as a step towards gender balance in governance.

Mignot emphasized the importance of inclusive politics in fostering national growth and empowering women for successful development.
