Experts Urge Against Ethnic Profiling in Security Discourse

During a conference organized by Beacon Security Intelligence Limited and the WhiteInk Institute for Strategic Education and Research in Abuja, experts including Dr. Kabir Adamu and Brig Gen Saleh Bala addressed the dangers of ethnic profiling and stereotyping in security discourse.

They highlighted that the misuse of language can undermine national unity and security operations. The conference, which featured six intensive sessions, focused on the root causes of violence and the legal implications of terminology used in media narratives.

The experts emphasized the importance of choosing language that promotes peacebuilding and respects human dignity. As a result of the discussions, two major policy tools were developed: an anti-ethnic stereotyping toolkit and a national policy brief.

These documents aim to provide clear guidance for security agencies and media, ensuring that operations do not stigmatize communities. The toolkit will be finalized and submitted to relevant institutions to enhance community security and strengthen national cohesion, particularly in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
