Falana Demands Justice for 37 Miners' Deaths in Niger

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, has called on Niger State's Attorney-General, Nasiru Mu’azu, to ensure a swift investigation and prosecution of individuals responsible for the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna. This incident occurred on Thursday, September 17, following the arrest of numerous individuals during raids on illegal mining sites.

The Federal Government is currently investigating the deaths and has formed a 10-member independent committee, suspending officers linked to the incident. Niger State Governor Umaru Bago confirmed the fatalities and stated that forensic examinations, including autopsies, are underway to determine the cause of death.

Reports indicate overcrowding and poor ventilation in the detention facility, with some detainees being teenagers. Falana emphasized the need for detention centers to adhere to the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, known as the Nelson Mandela Rules.
