IMF Urges Nigeria to Seek Financial Support Swiftly

Kristalina Georgieva, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), advised countries under economic pressure to act swiftly and seek financial support when necessary, warning that delays could worsen economic conditions. Speaking during a press conference at the 2026 Spring Meetings of the World Bank and IMF in Washington D.C., she addressed the global economic challenges exacerbated by the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.

Georgieva noted that nations have already begun implementing policies to reduce energy consumption and highlighted the need for strong fiscal policies to build buffers during periods of economic instability. She emphasized that countries should not hesitate to seek financial assistance when needed.

Georgieva also discussed the broader implications of the Middle East conflict, which has inflicted significant economic damage and disrupted supply chains, driving prices up and slowing global economic growth. She warned that if the conflict persists, oil prices could remain elevated, further deteriorating global economic conditions.
