FCCPC Warns of Rising Substandard Goods in Nigeria

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), led by Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Tunji Bello, has expressed alarm over the rising circulation of substandard goods in Nigeria. During a World Consumer Rights Day event on March 15, 2026, Bello highlighted that the prevalence of unsafe products is eroding consumer trust and undermining the country's economic integrity.

The commission has identified numerous products that fail to meet basic safety and quality standards, often due to improper labeling and misrepresentation by manufacturers and distributors. Bello noted that weak internal controls and a poor compliance culture contribute to these issues, which directly affect economic stability and investor confidence.

The FCCPC is committed to enforcing compliance with the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act of 2018, emphasizing that businesses have a duty to ensure products in the market are safe, durable, and fit for purpose. The commission plans to enhance market surveillance and strengthen product testing to address these concerns effectively.
