FCCPC Enhances Consumer Rights in Nigeria's Electricity Sector

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) is intensifying efforts to safeguard consumer rights in Nigeria's electricity sector by engaging with regulators at both national and state levels. This initiative is part of the implementation of the 2023 Electricity Act, which Mr.

Tunji Bello, the executive vice chairman of the FCCPC, described as a significant reform in the sector. The Act allows states to establish their own electricity regulatory commissions, enabling them to regulate intrastate electricity markets according to their unique economic and social contexts.

Bello stressed that consumers perceive electricity as a single system and expect protection regardless of jurisdictional boundaries. He noted the importance of seamless cooperation among regulatory bodies, including the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), to ensure timely and effective consumer protection.

Over the past year, the FCCPC has collaborated closely with these organizations, emphasizing that the best outcomes arise from collaboration rather than rivalry.
