FCCPC Advocates Unified Consumer Protection in Power Sector

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has warned that Nigeria's emerging state electricity markets could face investment challenges if disparate regulatory standards are adopted nationwide. During a stakeholders’ engagement in Abuja, Mr.

Tunji Bello, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the FCCPC, advocated for stronger collaboration between federal and state electricity regulators. He stated that a harmonized consumer protection framework is essential to safeguard electricity users and provide certainty for investors under the Electricity Act 2023.

Bello described the Act as a landmark reform that allows states to establish independent electricity regulatory commissions, thereby reshaping Nigeria's electricity regulatory landscape. He stressed that the success of these reforms hinges on cooperation among regulators, as consumers expect seamless protection regardless of jurisdiction.

The meeting included officials from NERC, NEMSA, and state electricity regulatory commissions, highlighting the complementary roles of these agencies in regulating the electricity sector.
