FCT Agency Urges Residents Near Waterways to Relocate

The FCT Emergency Management Department, led by Director General Abdulrahman Moham, has issued a warning to residents living near waterways in Abuja to consider relocating as the rainy season intensifies. This appeal follows a flood incident that occurred early Friday at a building located at 22 Anthony Ikem Street, behind Blue Cabana Hotel in the Mabushi District.

The agency reported that an overnight downpour led to flooding on the ground floor of the building, which was submerged to window level. Emergency services received a distress call at 3:00 AM and deployed a search and rescue team to the scene.

Although no lives were lost, the flood destroyed household items, food supplies, and important documents belonging to residents. The agency's statement, signed by Nkechi Isa, emphasized the need to clear blocked drains and remove structures built over water channels, as Abuja has experienced recurring flash floods during peak rainy seasons, often linked to blocked drainage systems and rapid urban expansion.
