Nigerian Government Launches High-Purity Gold Refinery in Lagos, Plans More Nationwide

The Nigerian Federal Government has launched a high-purity gold refinery in Lagos and unveiled plans for three additional gold refineries at different stages of development nationwide. The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alak, disclosed the readiness of a $600 million lithium processing plant during a meeting on January 13.

This initiative signifies the government's commitment to value addition policies in the mining sector, positioning Nigeria as Africa's leading mining hub and a strategic partner in the global mining industry. The government's focus on transitioning to green energy sources is highlighted through the establishment of these refineries.

The collaboration with Saudi Arabia, as discussed by Ibrahim Al Khorayef, the Saudi Minister of Mining Resources, emphasizes leveraging comparative advantages and building capacity in mining technology and exploration. The partnership aims to boost investor confidence, enhance traceability, and promote environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards in the mining sector.

The move to process critical minerals like lithium and gold locally aligns with Nigeria's economic diversification goals and supports the global clean energy value chain amidst increasing demand for battery materials.
