Nigeria Bans Vehicle Imports Without Certification

On Tuesday, the Federal Government of Nigeria announced a ban on the importation of vehicles without prior certification, aimed at enhancing road safety and reducing the influx of substandard automobiles. The initiative, unveiled by Minister of State for Industry, Trade, and Investment John Enoh, is part of a comprehensive regulatory regime that will take immediate effect.

Under the new policy, vehicles must obtain a pre-shipment certificate before entering Nigeria, and any vehicle that fails to meet the required standards will be denied entry. This policy is aligned with the fiscal framework and aims to strengthen the long-standing collaboration with the Standard Organisation of Nigeria and the National Automotive Design and Development Council.

Enoh emphasized that the program is not a pilot scheme but a full government policy. The initiative involves multiple agencies, including the Nigeria Customs Service and the Central Bank of Nigeria, to ensure compliance and enhance vehicle safety standards.

Enoh also acknowledged concerns regarding the impact on the popular "tokunbo" vehicles while stressing the need for a balanced approach.
