Nigeria Prioritizes Care Economy at National Caregivers Summit

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared the care economy a national priority, as announced by Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman Ibrahim, the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, during the National Caregivers Summit held on May 18, 2026, in Abuja. This summit was part of activities commemorating the 2026 National Children's Day.

The minister emphasized the need to strengthen Nigeria's social protection system and advance the care economy, which is crucial for national development. She highlighted ongoing reforms within the ministry, including efforts to enforce the Child Rights Act and combat violence against children.

The summit served as a launchpad for a nationwide training and certification program for caregivers, aiming to empower Nigerian youth and enhance women's participation in the economy. The Federal Government is also partnering with the World Bank to expand educational access and digital literacy for 8.6 million girls across 18 states, ensuring every child is protected and empowered.
