Federal Government Launches Solar Mini-Grids in Gombe

The federal government, via the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), has successfully ended a 17-year blackout in Tallasse and the wider Balanga local government area of Gombe State. A 1MW solar mini-grid with a 2.4MWh battery energy storage system was commissioned in partnership with the Gombe State Government and a private developer.
Additionally, the construction of a 16MW network of four interconnected solar mini-grids across Dukku, Bajoga, Kumo, and Kaltungo communities has commenced. This initiative aims to supply power to homes, farms, markets, and small businesses.
The Tallasse project currently serves 6,028 connections and supports electric groundnut oil processing, rice milling, flour grinding facilities, and electric tricycles. Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe stated that these projects align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and will significantly improve the daily lives of residents.
Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya emphasized the collaboration between Gombe State and the Federal Government, highlighting the economic benefits for the agricultural community. REA Managing Director/CEO Abba Aliyu noted the shift in focus towards measuring economic outcomes rather than just connections.
