Nigeria to Adopt Unified 112 Emergency Call Number

The Nigerian government, through the National Economic Council (NEC) chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, is set to finalize the adoption of a unified emergency number, 112, across the country. This decision was made during a meeting with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), led by Chairman Ibikun Olorunnimbe, and other stakeholders.
The initiative aims to strengthen Nigeria's emergency response system by establishing a multi-agency implementation committee. Shettima directed the NCC to develop a roadmap for the nationwide adoption of the 112 emergency number, aligning with global best practices.
The NCC is also tasked with leveraging technology to establish 35 emergency communication centers nationwide. Olorunnimbe briefed Shettima on the progress made towards this initiative and emphasized the need for commitment from state governors to maintain the necessary infrastructure.
The Vice President highlighted the importance of all emergency response agencies, including the police and ambulance services, to ensure swift assistance to those in distress.
