FG Allocates N487bn for Rail and Highway Projects in 2026

The Federal Government of Nigeria has inserted N487.56 billion worth of new infrastructure projects into the 2026 budget, signaling a strong push to expand the rail transport network beyond previously planned projects. This budget, which is part of a larger N58.18 trillion fiscal plan, includes nine major projects, with the Lagos Green Line receiving the largest allocation of N170 billion.

Other significant allocations include N125 billion for the Kaduna light rail project, N120 billion for the Kano light rail, and N50 billion for the Ogun State light rail. Additionally, N4 billion is earmarked for feasibility studies for a light rail system between Enugu and Maiduguri, and N5.6 billion for a nationwide narrow gauge rail assessment.

The budget reflects a broader strategy to connect Nigeria's southern and northern economic belts, with a focus on enhancing urban mass transit systems. The Federal Ministry of Works has seen an increase in capital allocation to N3.17 trillion, reinforcing the government's commitment to infrastructure development.
