Nigeria Government Assures Safety Amid U.S. Embassy Evacuations

The Federal Government of Nigeria has reassured both citizens and the international community regarding the country's safety, following the U.S. Department of State's decision to evacuate non-emergency personnel and their families from the U.S.

Embassy in Abuja due to security concerns. The U.S. cited a deteriorating security situation across 23 states in Nigeria, prompting the advisory for American citizens to reconsider travel to the country due to risks of crime, terrorism, kidnapping, and civil unrest.

Consulate General in Lagos continues to provide services for American citizens. The travel advisory, effective April 8, 2026, categorizes Nigeria's overall status at Level 3, with certain states designated as Level 4, indicating a "do not travel" warning.

Nigerian Minister of Information, Mohan Idri, emphasized that the U.S. decision reflects precautionary measures rather than a general breakdown of law and order, asserting that the majority of the country remains stable.
