NIHSA Issues Flood Warning for 17 Nigerian States

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a flood warning alert for residents in 17 states, indicating a risk of flooding over the next seven days due to rising water levels. This alert, designated as National Flood Advisory Alert No.

NFA 2026 200, covers the period from July 21 to July 27. According to NIHSA's Director General, Umar Mohammed, the warning is prompted by a steady rise in water levels at the Kei River monitoring station, increasing the likelihood of localized flooding along river channels and floodplains in identified states.

The states at medium flood risk include Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara. Mohammed noted that 16 river gauging stations across the country are currently recording elevated water levels, posing risks to nearby communities.

Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to take immediate precautionary measures, including relocating to safer areas and preparing emergency response plans.
