FG, Japan Intensify Talks on $238m Loan for National Power Grid Expansion

The Federal Government of Nigeria and Japan are in talks for a $238 million loan to expand the national electricity grid, with a focus on the transmission segment. The discussions took place during the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) in Yokohama, Japan, where President Bola Tinubu participated.

The loan, facilitated by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), will support the expansion of the grid, including the addition of new transmission lines and substations. Additionally, Nigeria is advancing a $190 million renewable energy loan facility supported by JICA to scale distributed renewable energy solutions in underserved communities.

Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, emphasized the importance of strengthening the power sector through infrastructure development and technical training to improve access to reliable and sustainable electricity for Nigerians.
