Federal Government Shifts 2026 Projects to 2027 Budget

The Federal Government has announced its intention to transfer outstanding projects and expenditure commitments from the 2026 budget into the 2027 fiscal year. This decision aims to eliminate the practice of implementing multiple national budgets simultaneously.
Taiwo Oyedele, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, made this announcement on Thursday in Abuja during the launch of the October 2026 edition of the World Bank’s Nigeria Development Update. The Senate and House of Representatives had previously approved an extension of the capital component of the 2025 budget to December 31, 2026, allowing additional time for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to execute capital projects.
Oyedele acknowledged weaknesses in budget preparation and implementation, particularly unrealistic revenue projections, and stated that reforms would be introduced to create a more realistic budgeting framework from 2027. He assured that future revenue and expenditure projections would be based on actual fiscal performance.
The government plans to submit the 2027 Appropriation Bill to the National Assembly before the new fiscal year begins.
