Akume Commits to Economic Reforms for Nigerians' Prosperity

The Federal Government has pledged to consolidate the economic reforms initiated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration, aiming to translate these reforms into improved living conditions for ordinary Nigerians. Sen. George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for Nigeria’s Independence Day Anniversary, made this statement during a World Press Conference on September 24, 2026, in Abuja.

The theme for Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary is “From Reforms to Stability: Consolidating Nigeria’s Renewed Hope for Shared Prosperity.” Akume highlighted the need to ensure that the benefits of reforms lead to tangible improvements in citizens' lives. He noted ongoing challenges such as poverty and infrastructure deficits, while emphasizing the government's focus on structural reforms initiated under the Renewed Hope Agenda in 2023.

These reforms include the removal of the fuel subsidy and the unification of foreign exchange windows, aimed at restoring fiscal balance and attracting investment.
