FG Advocates Strategic Procurement for Food Security

Ogunbiyi, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, advocated for strategic public procurement as a vital tool for enhancing logistics systems in Africa. He highlighted that public procurement accounts for 12 to 20 percent of GDP, making every procurement decision an investment opportunity that can drive industrial growth, job creation, and improved infrastructure.

Dr. Ogunbiyi pointed out that inefficiencies in supply chains significantly contribute to post-harvest losses and high food prices, which threaten food security.

He urged governments to invest in logistics infrastructure, including roads, railways, and digital platforms, to connect producers with markets. He also called for the adoption of technology-driven procurement practices to modernize supply chains and support the goals of Agenda 2063 and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
