FG Aims to Strengthen Democracy and Economic Growth

The Federal Government of Nigeria is actively pursuing stronger alliances to enhance democracy and stimulate economic growth. Georg Akum, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, made this announcement on Thursday in Abuja during the launch of a report aimed at strengthening the nexus between democracy and economic development.

The report, which was issued by Chris Ugwuegbulam, highlights the necessity of engaging key stakeholders, including national and sub-national governments, the private sector, and civil society organizations, to build a resilient democratic system. Akum stressed the importance of public confidence in democratic institutions, transparency, and credible electoral systems.

He also noted the need for effective dispute resolution mechanisms and legislative environments that promote accountability and inclusiveness. Former President Goodluck Jonathan, who is the Chairman of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, underscored the significance of freedom, justice, and sustainable democracy, urging the government to entrench these values for economic advancement.

Ann Iyonu, the Executive Director of the foundation, outlined ten policy imperatives aimed at catalyzing national development.
