FG Urges Airlines to Reconsider Flight Suspension Plans

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, has summoned an emergency meeting with airline operators in response to a sharp increase in aviation fuel prices. The price of Jet A1 fuel has surged from N900 per liter on February 28, 2026, to N3,300 per liter today, representing a 300% increase.

Keyamo has appealed to airlines to suspend plans to halt flight operations and to exercise restraint in increasing ticket prices, as such actions could lead to significant hardships for travelers and potentially depress demand for air travel. The letter addressed to airline operators on April 14, 2026, highlighted the challenges faced by the aviation sector and emphasized the government's commitment to supporting the industry.

An emergency stakeholder meeting is scheduled for April 22, 2026, in Abuja, aimed at finding sustainable solutions to the crisis. Keyamo warned that the situation poses a threat to the industry and could disrupt the economy, erode public confidence, and undermine ongoing reforms in the aviation sector.
