FG Suspends New University Approvals for Six Years

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a six-year suspension on the approval of new universities, polytechnics, and colleges across the country. This decision was made during a meeting of the Federal Executive Council, presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Minister of Education explained that this temporary restriction aims to enhance the quality and stability of existing tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The government believes that the rapid growth in the number of higher institutions has posed challenges in maintaining strong academic standards and ensuring financial stability, particularly for privately owned schools.

Recent data from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board indicated that out of 2.3 million candidates who applied for admission to tertiary institutions last year, only 228,000 were able to secure admission to public universities. Additionally, the council restored the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education to full status, aiming to improve literacy and digital skills among young adults in Nigeria.
