Nigeria's 29 Universities Ranked Globally in 2027 Education List

Nigeria has achieved a significant milestone in higher education, with 29 universities making it to the 2027 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, the highest representation from any country in Sub-Saharan Africa. This increase from 24 universities in 2026 is credited to ongoing reforms under President Bola Tinubu's administration and efforts by the Federal Ministry of Education to enhance the quality and global visibility of Nigerian tertiary institutions.
Five universities entered the rankings for the first time, and a total of 61 institutions participated in the ranking exercise. Federal universities performed notably well, with five of the seven Nigerian universities in the global top 1,200.
The University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos maintained their positions in the 801–1000 band, while Ahmadu Bello University and the University of Ilorin advanced to the 1001–1200 band. The ministry also announced plans for a national ranking of universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education, led by NiTERAC, to foster competition and improve institutional performance.
